Situated alongside the River Great Ouse, in the heart of the
Bedfordshire countryside, Great Barford offers all the benefits of
rural living, yet enjoys excellent access to both Bedford and the
A1.
It’s impressive 15th Century bridge, spanning the full width
of the River Ouse, is a stunning landmark which acts as a portal into
the village, where beautiful riverside walks, fishing and boating
set a leisurely pace of life.
Steeped in history, Great Barford is listed in the Domesday Book of
1086. The 15th Century tower of All Saints Church and numerous listed
buildings dating back to the 17th century, together with a selection
of country pubs and a traditional village green, add to the character
and charm of this delightful village.
Local amenities include a village shop and Post Office, a Doctors’
surgery that serves the village and surrounding area – and three
schools, Alban Middle School, Great Barford Lower School and the Sunshine
Pre-School. There is good selection of private schools in nearby Bedford,
including Bedford School for boys, Dame Alice Harper and Bedford High
School for girls and the co-educational Bedford Modern School. Bedford
also boasts excellent shopping facilities, together with a cinema,
theatre and a range of pubs, clubs and restaurants for evening entertainment.
With the opening of the bypass, Great Barford remains a quiet and
peaceful place to live, whilst its proximity to Bedford and Sandy
make it an ideal base for commuting. Train links provide a fast and
frequent service from Sandy to London Kings Cross in around 50 minutes
or from Bedford to London St Pancras in as little as 45 minutes. St
Pancras International Rail Terminal now provides the Eurostar service
into Europe. The village also enjoys good road access to the A1 (less
than 3 miles), the M1, Milton Keynes and Luton Airport.
